Sex and the Heart. What women need to know about erectile dysfunction – a scientific approach how to prevent and manage impotence in men.

Approximately 50 to 70% of all men above 50 years of age suffer from erectile dysfunction, the inability to gain or maintain an erection sufficient enough for successful sexual intercourse. Sexual Dysfunction - A Multidisciplinary Team Approach to Sexual Health
A satisfactory sex life is an essential component of life, and it is well known that sexual problems increase with age, as well as with the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, kidney failure and, most notably, heart diseases. There is a very close association between cardiovascular diseases and erectile dysfunction (ED). Unfortunately, this well-known phenomenon, based on scientific knowledge about vasculogenic erectile dysfunction and endothelial dysfunction, has not translated into clinical practice and routine. Too many patients with erectile dysfunction and concomitant cardiac problems are not treated for ED because they are considered to be at high risk for sexual activity or for using common treatments for ED.
